At Mentone Primary School, we are committed to supporting the social and emotional development of all students.
One of the key ways we do this is through our Friendology program.
Friendology is an evidence-based program designed to help students develop the skills needed to build and maintain healthy friendships. It provides students with practical strategies to navigate the ups and downs of friendships in a positive, respectful and resilient way.
Through Friendology, students learn how to:
recognise what makes a good friend
communicate effectively and respectfully
manage conflict and resolve disagreements
understand and regulate their emotions
develop empathy and perspective-taking skills
The program uses age-appropriate language and real-life scenarios to support students in understanding friendship dynamics. It encourages students to reflect on their own behaviour and make thoughtful choices that contribute to positive relationships.
Importantly, Friendology also helps students build resilience. They learn that friendship challenges are a normal part of growing up and are equipped with strategies to respond calmly and confidently.
At Mentone Primary School, Friendology is embedded within our broader wellbeing approach. It supports a safe, inclusive and respectful school culture where every student feels connected and valued.
By explicitly teaching these skills, we aim to empower our students to develop strong, healthy relationships—both within the classroom and beyond
